Port City Daily: Report suggests annual savings for future Carolina Beach renourishments

A “greater burden” is likely to fall on Carolina Beach and New Hanover County to keep that town’s beach strand in shape, says a recent report that explores the level of savings the town might need. 

To brace for the worst, it might come to $586,000 annually, the report says. 

The Carolina Beach Town Council will hear a presentation on the document–titled “Carolina Beach Future Funding Requirements”–at its regular meeting Tuesday night...

Wrightsville Beach Magazine: The Market is Looking Up: 12th Annual Real Estate Roundup

Here's a great article from Wrightsville Beach Magazine summing up the state of the Wilmington real estate market. 

This is the rundown for Pleasure Island: 
"Pleasure Island saw strong increases as well with a $19.4 million increase from 2011, which was a 41-percent increase over 2009 sales. 

Year-end also saw 66 additional properties pending closing on this two-town island. 

Twenty-five percent of all the closings was either a short sale or foreclosure, says Sharon Laney, co-owner of Prudential Laney Real Estate, and sales manager of the Carolina Beach office. But now that inventory is drying up, we will get back to a normal market when properties are not a foreclosure or short sale, she says..."

Star News: Veggie Wagon grant is shot in the arm for local farms

Star News: Carolina Beach officer who stopped Fort Hood rampage to be the focus of a local film on the incident

Kimberly Barbour Munley, a Carolina Beach native and civilian police officer credited with stopping the deadly 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, will serve as consultant to a group of local filmmakers who have set out to tell her story on the big screen.

“Fort Hood: The Untold Truth” will focus on Munley’s experience on Nov. 5, 2009 – Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 people and injured several others – and flash back to earlier events in the officer’s life, according to the film’s Indiegogo webpage...

2nd Annual East Coast Shag Classic February 14-17, on Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

The 2nd annual East Coast Shag Classic kicks off at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort on Wrightsville Beach February 14, 2013. Star News: UNCW studies effects of ingested plastic on sea turtles

Three glass vials filled with sea turtle digestive juices sat tucked away in a freezer at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, wrapped in aluminum foil and carefully labelled – one from the turtle's stomach, one each from its large and small intestine. Once thawed, the fluids, collected during a necropsy in Virginia Beach, could potentially help researchers conclusively determine whether the consumption of plastic debris, a problem plaguing sea life across the globe, has toxic side effects for the flippered reptiles...

Star News: Parking fees could be on rise again in Wrightsville Beach

Despite already having the highest rate around, the Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman is considering another increase in parking fees. 

Alderwoman Elizabeth King first proposed the increase at the town's annual parking workshop Jan. 17... 

The proposal for new rates would increase the parking fee by 25 cents an hour. Lanier Parking estimates that this would increase annual revenue by roughly $255,000...
