On October 6, 2012, cyclists participating in the 14th annual Mountain to the Coast Bike Tour arrived in Carolina Beach after completing a 451 mile bike trek which began in the mountains of Brevard, NC.
During the seven day ride, riders overnighted in Brevard, Lake Lure, Shelby,
Matthews, Rockingham, Lumberton, White Lake and Carolina Beach. The
cyclist traveled between 40 to 80 miles per day and were exposed to gorgeous NC landscapes, historical sites and had the opportunity to take in the culture of each
There were a total of 1,129 participants and they came
from 38 states, the District of Columbia, Russia, Great Britain, Switzerland and
Canada. The average age of the riders was 56 with the youngest being just five
years old and the oldest 84.
Hosted by North Carolina Amateur Sports (NCAS), Cycle
North Carolina is a fully supported cross-state recreational bike tour of the
Tarheel state. Formed in 1999, Cycle North Carolina is designed to promote
physical fitness and health, provide economic impact and publicity to rural
communities statewide while showcasing the state’s beauty, scenic attractions
and cultural diversity.
