Pleasure Island has another great week of FREE activities for your vacationing and leisure-time fulfillment. There is always something for everyone on our little slice of paradise.

Please plan on joining us for Thursday nights’ FREE concert on August 9th from 6:30 until 9:30 featuring Emily Minor.

North Carolina native, Emily Minor, is the fresh new face of country music. Starting out in Greenville, NC in local college bars, Emily developed her love for the stage, live music, and bright lights. "Singing to me is more like a need to live. It's not a hobby, it's a way of life. It's the only way of life for me," she says. Growing up, Emily sang the National Anthem for various minor league teams in Wilmington, North Carolina and appeared numerous times at the historical Azalea and River festivals of Wilmington.

In August of 2007, Emily made a trip to Charleston, South Carolina. There she faced critical American Idol judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson. Little did she know, they would hand her a "golden ticket" and send her to Hollywood, California. Emily went on to be a Top 50 finalist and after rigorous rehearsals and sleepless nights, Emily said good-bye to the show. "Being rejected and failing is just a part of life and it's a huge part of making it in the music industry. Some are going to love you, some are going to hate you, and it makes for writing a great song," she says of her experience with American Idol.

After leaving the show, Emily returned to East Carolina University to finish her degree in Education. In Nashville, Tennessee, Emily had to opportunity to perform at the famous honkytonk, Legends Corner. Many of country music's influential icons have appeared at Legends Corner Bar and Emily counts herself fortunate that she was able to stand on the same stage as they had. Shortly after, Emily teamed up with four talented musicians to form her very own self titled band. Emily is currently writing her own songs, recording, and making appearances along the east coast and southeastern region of the country. Emily currently calls Nashville home.

And don’t forget to stay for our fantastic Fireworks show at 9:00 pm (weather permitting). Come join your family and friends at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk for a night of FREE fun, music and fireworks.

The following night, we will be presenting our fifth of the FREE Summer Concert Series at the Ft. Fisher Air Force Recreation Area with Kure Beach’s local favorite – South of K. South of K is an acoustic band that many of you will recognize as a neighbor, family member, or even a long time friend! Each member resides or has close ties to Kure Beach, NC. Dennis Cooper, Aaron and Jamie King, and Joey Canady each have a long history of performing in varying music genres, but their love for their brand of bluegrass and their strong friendship has brought them together to form South of K. What you will experience with this band is more than merely music; it's "friendship manifested in music!"

Don’t forget about Family Night every Tuesday at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk from 6:30-8:30, followed by Cash BINGO at the Gazebo Stage from 7:00-9:00 on Wednesday evenings. Let’s not forget, the very popular Carolina Beach Farmer’s Market held every Saturday from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Carolina Beach Lake.

To close out the week, this Sunday, August 12th, the movie at the Carolina Beach Lake will be the hilarious Disney film, Mars Needs Moms with voices by Seth Green and Joan Cusack. The showing will be at 8:45 pm at the Carolina Beach Lake at the corner of South Lake Park Boulevard and Atlanta Avenue.

Take out the trash, eat your broccoli-who needs moms, anyway? Nine-year-old Milo (Seth Green) finds out just how much he needs his mom (Joan Cusack) when she's nabbed by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness for their own young. Produced by the team behind Disney's A Christmas Carol and The Polar Express, Mars Needs Moms showcases Milo's quest to save his mom-a wild adventure that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader (Mindy Sterling). With the help of a tech-savvy, underground earthman named Gribble (Dan Fogler) and a rebel Martian girl called Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), Milo just might find his way back to his mom-in more ways than one. Based on the Book by Berkeley Breathed.
