Star News: Cape Fear River to get man-made oyster reef

In about three years, the lower Cape Fear River will have its first oyster reef, a man-made structure built with locally manufactured concrete materials that officials said will benefit both the river’s water quality and the region’s commercial and recreational fishermen.

“By creating long-term sustainable oyster reefs, you get a known location where people can come and fish,” said Pelle Holmlund, a biologist with the state Division of Marine Fisheries. “These oyster reefs are some of the best artificial reefs you can get...”
