News & Observer: A 478-pound shark catch that nobody knows about

Fifty-two years ago, 132-pound Bob Kentrolis broke his reel and wore out the knees of his blue jeans while wrestling what may have been a world record 478-pound blue shark to the sand of Wrightsville Beach. His catch is still the state record, but at the time his trophy was hushed more than celebrated. 

Kentrolis was a student at New Hanover High on June 1, 1961, when he finally won the 12-hour tug-of-war with the massive fish off the Crystal Fishing Pier, near the Masonboro Inlet...
