Many of the people gathered at 7 p.m. Sunday at the E Street beach access in Kure Beach were volunteers for the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project, but many – including myself, my boyfriend and his family – were simply curious.
Volunteers were excavating a sea turtle nest that hatched last week. They do this to count the eggs and examine the nest – under the sand – to see if any sea turtles failed to hatch or if any hatchlings were left behind...
