Several news outlets are reporting that a 10 year old boy was bitten by a shark at Holden Beach on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 24, 2011.
According to the victim's father, they boy was swimming in three to four feet of water when he suffered a shark bite on his heel.
The boy was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. His father stated that his son faces a long road to full recovery.

This marks the forth shark bite this year on Carolina Beaches. There was a fifth bite that occurred far out to sea:
•August 17, 2011: Kure Beach
•August 11, 2011: Beaufort Inlet (13 miles off shore)
•July 19, 2011: Ocracoke Island
•June 26, 2011: Topsail Island
