Carolina Beach has its share of seasonal shops, ice cream parlors and push-cart vendors. But a new crop of year-round businesses will require the support of more than sun-drenched tourists.
Vinny Doria, who opened the doors Friday to his Italian restaurant Uncle Vinny's, is banking on the locals keeping the restaurant afloat in winter months when the tourist traffic is gone and some restaurants close on certain days or for a couple of months.
"If you go after the locals they will keep you busy year-round," he said.
But it's tourism that brought him here, and he said the island's tourism industry is poised for an "explosion..."
