Substantial Increases in NC Ferry Passenger Charges on the Table

The Wilmington Star reports that Rep. Ric Killian, R-Mecklenburg, stated on Tuesday the state ferry system must recover more of its costs from passengers. Currently the NC Ferry Division recovers about 5% of its operating costs from passengers.

One of the proposals on the table would call for an increase in the Fort Fisher/Southport ferry run from the current $5 per automobile to $18 but lower increases are also possible.

Personally, I know quite a few people who regularly use the ferry for work but I can't imagine they would pony up $36 a day for a round trip ride.
