Wilmington Star: Holiday crowds give tourism industry in Southeastern N.C. a good feeling about 2011

Major kudos to all involved in this year's holiday events on Pleasure Island. It's quite obvious that the changes being made on the island over the last few years are having very positive results.

...Still, it appeared many visitors, perhaps more than last year, ventured to the area over the holidays, leaving many in the tourism industry optimistic about the new year.

Maybe it was some of Pleasure Island's holiday activities, or maybe it was the indoor swimming pool at Carolina Beach Courtyard by Marriott. Whatever the reason, all 144 of the hotel's rooms were booked New Year's Day weekend...

Connie Nelson, the CVB's (Cape Fear Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau) public relations director, said many people likely planned trips around holiday events in the area.

The CVB promoted several of them, including newer events such as the second annual Christmas by the Sea on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk and time-honored ones like the N.C. Holiday Flotilla in Wrightsville Beach...
