Daytona Beach News Journal: Whale Freed in Rare At-Sea Sedation

An endangered right whale swam south along the Florida coast this week, free of 50 feet of rope that had been wrapped around its head and flippers after scientists performed their second-ever sedation at sea.

Scientists successfully sedated the young female whale and cut the rope away on Saturday in the open Atlantic Ocean east of Cape Canaveral, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's fisheries service announced Tuesday.

It was only the second such operation ever to be completed on one of the rare whales...
