UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Program

What happens when a whale or dolphin strands itself on area beaches in Wilmington? Well fortunately for us, we don't have to rely on wanna-be Marine Biologists like George Costanza who seek fame by battling angry seas. Instead, we have trained volunteers at the University of North Carolina Wilmington who are ready and able to respond to any request.

Check out these photos of dedicated volunteers practicing how to respond to a stranded marine mammal. Also, if you click on "Stranding Archive," you'll see that these dedicated volunteers not only handle strandings in this area, but they also respond to emergencies throughout the state as well as South Carolina.
