Carolina Beach Receives $20,000 Bike Grant
The following is from the May 10th Wilmington Star News:
Carolina Beach was one of 12 municipalities across the state to get a bicycle and pedestrian planning grant from the DOT. Last week, the N.C. Board of Transportation awarded $315,850 to 12 municipalities for bicycle and pedestrian planning. Carolina Beach gets $20,000.
The DOT anticipates that the municipalities selected will begin the planning process this fall. The department also will be available to provide technical assistance to the municipalities. Since 2004, 92 N.C. municipalities have been awarded grants for comprehensive bicycle or pedestrian plans.

Great job - special thanks to Mike Kirkbride who has championed much of the effort to make the Greenway a reality.
I agree! Mike deserves alot of praise for his tireless efforts on several Island initiatives. He's a class act and a real asset to our community.
That's great news!
Yes--three cheers for Mike Kirkbride and anyone who has been pulling for a bike path on the island. After pleading with the Town for a bike path some twenty years ago, and being told that one was definitely in the works, and then waiting and waiting, I had given up hope. Some fifteen years ago, my mother fell off her bike and tumbled onto the middle of Dow Road. We never again tried to bike to the State Park to see the sunset. About five years ago, as my cousin was riding his bike along Dow Road he was hit by a car and killed. So, yes, three cheers.
